India’s upcoming lunar endeavour, Chandrayaan-3, stands as a testament to the relentless dedication of ISRO scientists. As the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover gear up for their planned moon landing, a remarkable Tamil connection and an innovative scientific payload underscore the mission’s significance.

Embracing Tamil Excellence

The Chandrayaan-3 mission proudly showcases the invaluable contributions of three Tamil Nadu scientists who have led pivotal lunar missions in India’s space journey. Fondly referred to as the ‘Moon Man of India’, Mayilsamy Annadurai spearheaded the inaugural Chandrayaan mission in 2008. M Vanitha took the reins for Chandrayaan-2 in 2019, and the current Chandrayaan-3 Mission is under the capable guidance of M Veeramuthuvel.

Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing Time

Following Chandrayaan-3’s liftoff on July 14 at 2.35 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Veeramuthuvel swiftly returned to the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru. His task: to meticulously track the rocket’s journey. With bated breath, he emphasized that only after confirming a soft lunar landing – slated for August 23 at 6.04 PM – could he provide insights to the eager media.

Beyond the human stories, the Chandrayaan-3 mission introduces the world to the ‘SHAPE’ payload nestled within the propulsion module. Standing for Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth, this experimental payload embarks on a mission of its own. With a focus on studying Earth’s spectro-polarimetric signatures within the near-infrared wavelength range, the SHAPE payload embodies ISRO’s commitment to cutting-edge scientific exploration.
