Over 11,000 fake GST registrations detected: FM

According to the office of finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance ministry has discovered more than 11,000 phoney GST registrations and is taking action against them. She called a high-level meeting to discuss the ongoing campaign against phoney GST invoices that are used to evade paying GST.

“…Sitharaman was told that 11,140 such registrations have already been detected and action has been initiated against them. The FM was apprised of the methods being adopted like identity theft of people,” finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s office tweeted on Friday.

She made note during the discussion of the current ministry initiatives, such as OTP-based Aadhaar verification and a pilot programme for biometric-based Aadhaar authentication during registration in high-risk situations.

In the tweet, it was stated that “AI/ML tools are being extensively used to identify possible fake networks.” The revenue secretary and the chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) informed the FM of this. To prevent the introduction of fraudulent organizations into the GST ecosystem, the minister gave the officials instructions to further improve the registration process. She demanded that a nationwide campaign be launched to outline the goals of the unique effort to filter out fraudulent entities.

A two-month special campaign by GST officers to combat fraudulent GST registration has already started. The GST Council will also address tax evasion at its upcoming meeting on July 11 and consider how to close loopholes to prevent people from fraudulently claiming GST refunds.
