Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court of the central government’s response after a five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud requested it to establish a deadline for the reinstatement of electoral democracy in the former state.

-The top government lawyer announced that on August 31 he will present a thorough statement to the bench, which also includes Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant, about the future of the union territory status of J-K and Ladakh.

“Democracy is important, although we agree that in view of the national security scenario, reorganizing the state can be done,” the bench remarked after hearing Mehta’s arguments in support of the Centre’s decision to abolish the special status of the former state and its reorganization.

However, the court ruled that the absence of electoral democracy could not continue indefinitely.

“This needs to stop. Please give us a definite date when real democracy will be restored. The bench declared, “We want to record this,” and ordered Mehta and Attorney General R. Venkataramani to secure approval from the political leadership and report back to the court.
